Hinman Traditions

Hinman College has been has a large influence on the students that have shared its halls. For over 40 years, students have enjoyed social activities, pursued academic endeavors and learned the skills to lead. Through the years, Hinman College has developed a strong and unique sense of spirit and tradition. Our strongest and most impactful traditions of both the fall and spring are listed below.

Fall Semester

Co-Rec Football
During the fall semester, teams are formed within each building; each team must have three males and three females, with a female acting as the quarterback. Games are played during Saturday and Sunday mornings involving a pre-season, regular season, playoffs, and a championship game. The teams get to be create fun names that are unique from year to year.

Dorm Wars
A weekend event in the Fall semester, when each of the five halls in Hinman competes against the others in a series of contests.  It is a spirited, but friendly competition for "bragging rights" among the halls.  Dorm Wars has a new theme each year.  Each hall get to create a t-shirt design based off the theme and the hall's designated color.  Games such as clue run, bat-spin, hula hoop, egg-toss, four-legged race (three people with legs taped together), and tug-of-war.  It culminates with a lip-synch contest, and a competition involving each hall's rendition of a song with amusing, original lyrics written by the hall and based on the year's theme.

Student-Faculty Connect Dinner
A potluck dinner to which students invite their favorite faculty or staff member.  Held annually, usually in early November, it has become a regular event on the Hinman calendar.  Students are hosts and cooks, with faculty/staff as their guests (although faculty usually bring a dish as well).

Spring Semester

Hinman Semi-Formal
A dinner and dance organized each spring by the social vice-presidents of the Hinman community.  Open to all residents of Hinman and their guests, the semi-formal takes place in a decorated ballroom in an off-campus venue. Each year there is a different theme to make the event a special one.

Hinman Hysteria
Similar to Dorm Wars, Hinman Hysteria is a week-long series of events in the spring when each of the five halls compete against the others in activities involving athletic, intellectual, and/or artistic skill.  As in Dorm Wars, halls compete to design large banners around that year's theme, displaying them on the Hinman quad.  Sporting events throughout the week include kickball, dodgeball, basketball, volleyball, and Co-Rec football.  The name of the winning hall is added to a traveling trophy which resides for the year in that hall.

Hinman College Recognition Ceremony
Although at Binghamton there is only one formal graduation ceremony with cap and gown, each residential community organizes its own "graduation" ceremony for its seniors.  It's a more personal and intimate celebration, as seniors say "farewell" to their collegiate home away from home.  Each residential community has created its own set of distinctive awards and honors for its graduates, including the honor of being chosen as the senior speaker.  Followed by a reception for graduates and their families and guests.
