Community Service and Leadership

Community Service and Leadership are area-wide themes in Hinman College, and distinctive features of its culture.  Hinman is the only residential community at Binghamton University with this focus.  Recognizing the dynamic interrelationship of service and leadership, our goal is to encourage Hinman students to think globally, while also understanding the needs of those closest to them.  Active engagement in Community Service, and Leadership in campus organizations and activities are valuable stepping stones in Hinman students’ development.  Hinman College implements this emphasis on service and leadership in collaboration with a wide range of supportive programs and offices on campus, including the office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Programs, and the Center for Excellence in Student Leadership (XCEL).  At Hinman we are looking forward to working closely with the new Director of Civic Engagement at Binghamton University, providing opportunities for our residents to grow and develop into our future leaders.  In addition, Hinman offers academic opportunities in the form of classes with a community service and leadership component, offered only to Hinman residents and taught by our Faculty Master.  Visit our Living/Learning page for more information.
