FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

NEW STUDENTS' HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS

Why is there such demand for on-campus housing at Binghamton this year?
The current on-campus housing shortage is happening for a number of reasons: 1) a very high percentage of returning students have chosen to stay on campus rather than move off campus; 2) more newly admitted students are choosing to enroll at Binghamton than at other schools they applied to; and 3) in general, the downturn in the economy is causing families to consider public higher education rather than more expensive, private higher education.  In addition, Binghamton joins with all universities and colleges in the nation when it accepts more students than can be accommodated based on the proven premise that not all those accepted will actually enroll. This year the number of students who accepted our offer of enrollment has surpassed all expectations. Top

How many students will be housed in temporary triples or lounges?
Approximately 840 new students will be assigned space in temporary triple rooms at the time space in designed occupancy rooms is no longer available. In addition we may need to house an additional 65 new students in temporary lounge accommodations.Top

How are housing assignments made?
In general, students are housed based on the date of their housing application on a first- come, first-served basis. When a student is assigned to one of these temporary accommodations, it is because it is the only space available. Top

What is a temporary triple?
Temporary triples are standard double rooms that are tripled by adding an extra bed and dresser. Space permitting, an extra desk and chair can be requested. The temporary lounges will be set up with beds, desks, dressers and wardrobes for between 4 and 6 residents.Top

If there isn't enough room for three desks and chairs, how can three people be accommodated in one room?
Division of furniture and space in all rooms needs to be discussed by roommates as they settle in during the first week of school. Roommates need to be fair and consistent in determining personal space and how to live together in the room. Residential Life staff can help with a standardized division of furniture and closet space. Most rooms have only two ethernet ports, but since the residence halls and apartments are completely wireless, this usually does not present a problem. However, the ITS Help Desk has a number of hubs that can be borrowed to supply an additional port in the room if one's computer does not have wireless capability. Top

When will students be moved out of triples and lounges into standard double rooms?
We will move to relocate students who have been placed in lounges and temporary triples as soon as space in a designed occupancy room is identified.

  • Students living in lounges will have first priority for moving to standard rooms as soon as late cancellations and no-shows occur. Spaces will be offered as they become available until all students temporarily assigned to a lounge are moved to a standard room.
  • Students in temporary triples will be given the next priority. Generally, a vacancy is offered to the tripled room closest to it. The three roommates then need to discuss which two roommates will stay together. This discussion should be based on compatibility and relationships between roommates. If the three roommates cannot mutually decide among themselves who is to move, Residential Life staff will intervene to facilitate a decision. Top

How long will it take to move all students from lounges and temporary triples?
Although our goal is to move students to standard rooms at the earliest possible time, due to space limitations, students may remain in this type of housing for the entire fall semester and into the spring semester. Top

Will students in temporary triples and lounges receive a housing discount?
Everyone assigned to these temporary accommodations will be billed for a standard double room, although there are reduced rates for lounges and temporary triples. This way, when a student is reassigned, he or she will not be billed an additional amount. Rather, a credit will be issued based on the length of time the student has resided in a temporary lounge or tripled room. This credit results in a reduction of the student's charge. Credits for students who remain in this type of housing for the entire fall semester will be made at the end of the semester. The same procedure will be used for temporary triples remaining into the spring semester. Once the credit is processed, questions about whether this money is a refund or is applied to one's account can be addressed to the Office of Student Accounts. Top

What happens if three students in a temporary triple want to remain together?
Sometimes students assigned to temporary triples wish to remain together and not change rooms. When deciding to stay in a temporary triple, all the pros and cons should be weighed equally to arrive at a consensus. It is critical that each roommate have input into this decision so it will be equitable for all involved. If and when there are vacancies in designed occupancy rooms to accommodate everyone, students voluntarily remaining in triples will no longer receive a room credit. Top
